Christmas Lights Trail, 17th November until 25 December

This year, Christmas in the City will be bigger and better than ever!

The City of Perth is proud to announce the new event for 2017, the Christmas Lights Trail. Choose one of 39 evenings to walk our new Christmas Lights Trail throughout the City, featuring 16 mesmerising festive installations guaranteed to get you into the Christmas spirit. See the city’s laneways, streets and parks brighten with animated lights, projections and lively festivities.

Installations include:

  • Christmas Lights Tunnel, Northbridge Piazza
  • LED Christmas Tree, outside Roe St Bus Station
  • Christmas Constellation, Forrest Place
  • Giant Bauble, Murray St Mall
  • Tinsel Tangle, Perth Cultural Centre
  • The Dreamcatcher, Central Park
  • 20 Giant Candles, Hay St Mall
  • Christmas Projections, St George’s Cathedral
  • Deconstructed Christmas Tree, Elizabeth Quay
  • Christmas Tree for Lifeline WA, Elizabeth Quay

The Christmas Lights Trail can be experienced every night from 6pm until Christmas Day.

Pixel Sticks – Special bonus 
Murray St Mall, 6pm to 10pm
Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays
As an added bonus along the trail on selected nights, create your own Instagram-worthy images and have a go at twirling these pixel sticks that form stunning light patterns and colourful visuals right in front of you.

 

Launch of the Christmas Lights Trail, 17th November from 4.30pm

From 4.30pm, enjoy all the entertainment, Christmas Market and Twilight Markets before you walk the Christmas Lights Trail to be amazed by the lighting installations including the Christmas Lights Tunnel at Northbridge Piazza, Deconstructed Christmas Tree at Elizabeth Quay, Christmas Projections on St George’s Cathedral and 20 giant candles in Hay Street Mall, Plus heaps more.  

The City of Perth’s Christmas charity partner, Lifeline, will also be in the city with fun Christmas headbands available for a gold coin donation.

Enjoy the Twilight Hawkers Market, Perth City Christmas Market, Santa and his sleigh, aerial performances, Christmas concerts and an assortment of lighting installations to enjoy for the first time this Christmas season. From Forrest Place to Cathedral Square and plenty in between, you can celebrate the start of Christmas right across the city.

Christmas Market – Perth Makers Market
Corner William & Wellington Streets, 4pm to 9pm
Get some of your Christmas gift shopping done early with a selection of high-quality, handmade crafts from local makers. Wander over 70 stalls, get a picture with Santa, grab a snack and then check out the Christmas Lights Trail as the city comes to life this Christmas.

Twilight Hawkers Market                                
Forrest Place,  4.30pm to 9.30pm
Experience unique, culinary delights while you catch up with friends and family over dinner, go for an after work snack, or grab a bite to eat between Christmas shopping or exploring the Christmas Lights Trail.  It’s the perfect Friday night out. With a weekly changing smorgasbord of 40 stalls, offering specialty dishes from more than 30 countries, there are always new flavours to savour.

Spectacular Aerial Performances
Central Park, Murray Street Mall, Northbridge Piazza and Elizabeth Quay, 5pm to 9pm

Enjoy captivating performances by graceful aerialists, demonstrating their strength and agility whilst suspended in the air. Be amazed while these poised performers bend gravity to their will and make the acrobatics and death defying moves look effortless and elegant.

Roving Entertainment
Across the Christmas Lights Trail, 5pm to 9pm

You’ll be dazzled by spectacular ballerinas in giant snow globe orb balls, amused by the sweet talking, cheeky Christmas Presents, and of course, Santa himself, who will be on the streets of the Christmas Lights Trail for the evening.  Keep a look out for Santa’s mischievous six white boomers, roaming the streets on the hunt for Santa and his sleigh.

Santa will make a special appearance at his sleigh at Perth Cultural Centre from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, otherwise say hello to him on his journey through the city.

Live Music
Perth Cultural Centre Amphitheatre, 6.30pm to 8.30pm
 

Northbridge Piazza, 7pm to 8.30pm

Live Christmas acts perform at Perth Cultural Centre Amphitheatre and Northbridge Piazza. Bring a picnic rug or chair for Council House lawn or pull up a beanbag at Northbridge Piazza and enjoy Christmas music including the Australian Girls’ Choir, Catherine Summers Quintet, The Sweet Teas and Ruby & The Remedy.

Christmas Tree Harps – Live Performance
Perth Cultural Centre, Wetlands Amphitheatre 6pm to 9pm

The Christmas Tree Harps are guaranteed to not just tantalise your senses, but to also hypnotize and mesmerise! With their combined 94 harp strings to pluck you into the festive spirit, Michelle Smith and Catherine Ashley will take you on a journey of ethereal wonder, performing a range of Christmas hits from Winter Wonderland, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer right through to Jingle Bell Rock. This is a one-night only special performance so make sure not to miss out.

Pixel Sticks
Murray Street Mall, 6pm to 10pm

Don’t miss out on creating your own Instagram-worthy images and have a go of twirling pixel sticks that form stunning light patterns and colourful visuals right in front of you.

Christmas Projections, from 17th November

PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION FOR 2017: St George's Cathedral - 38 St George's Terrace, Perth

Enchanting new animated projections will light up the facade of St George's Cathedral, enhancing the building’s features with colour. With a brand new location in 2017, the illuminations will be accompanied by a festive soundtrack.

Head into the City for dinner or drinks with friends then enjoy the scenes nightly after sunset, followed by some late night Christmas shopping. A must see stop of the Christmas Lights Trail!

Please Note: Soundtrack will be unavilable on some occasions due to events inside the Cathedral. Projections will still run.

RAC Christmas Pageant, Saturday 2nd December 7pm

St Georges Terrace, Perth 

The RAC Christmas Pageant is returning to the streets of Perth to celebrate its 46th year and they have lots of new surprises in store for you.

St George's Terrace is set to come alive with the colour and magic of The RAC Christmas Pageant, supported by the City of Perth, Channel Seven and The West Australian.

This year's event promises to be packed with fun from end-to-end, including spectacular new floats, bands, music and dancing, Seven personalities including Fat Cat and, of course, Santa with his reindeers, food and beverage options and so much more!

City of Perth Christmas Carnival, Saturday 9th December & Sunday 10th December 10am - 4pm

Forrest Place

The carnival is coming to town and it’s bringing a truckload of Christmas fun with it, including free rides and activities for the whole family to enjoy. It’s the perfect day for some festive family fun.

 

Brass on the Grass, Wednesday's (6th, 13th and 20th December) 6.30pm-8.30pm

Victoria Gardens, East Perth

Head to the beautiful surrounds of Victoria Gardens to enjoy the smooth sounds of the City of Perth Band performing free Christmas concerts.

 

IGA Carols by Candelight for Variety, Sunday 17th December 11am-11.45pm

Langley Park

Bring a picnic rug, your Christmas cheer and raise your voice as thousands become one at this iconic fundraiser.

This event is full of fun, beginning with children’s rides and entertainment, face-painting and food stalls before the main concert. Proudly supported by the City of Perth.  

 

City of Perth Christmas Nativity, Wednesday 20 December to Friday 22 December

PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION: Supreme Court Gardens, Cnr Barrack Street & Riverside Drive, Perth

At a brand new location in 2017, bring your picnic rug and share in the traditional story of Christmas, brought to life on stage with hundreds of performers, live animals and Christmas carols at Supreme Court Gardens. 

Grounds Open: 4pm
Pre-show: 6pm*
Main show: 7:30pm*

*Both the pre-show and the main show will be intpreted by AUSLAN interpreters. 

For the comfort of all, there will be designated areas for ACROD, picnic rugs, low chairs and high chairs.

Limited food vendors will be on site. Why not grab your favourite takeway from an array of delicious city options on the way to the venue.

 

FREE Festive Flicks at Northbridge Piazza, Every Saturday - 18 November to 30 December

Check out one of the nearby restaurants or grab some tasty takeaway and pull up a beanbag for a free double-feature* movie screening at 5.30pm and 8.30pm. All of your Christmas favourites will be featured across seven Saturdays.

*25 November and 30 December are a 5.30pm screening only.

Santa will be at  the piazza from 4.30pm! Then he will be roaming throughout Northbridge once the movie starts.

Saturday 18th November 

The Polar Express, 5.30pm-7pm 

A young boy embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole on the Polar Express. During his adventure he learns about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas.

ELF, 8.30pm-10pm

After inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his ungainly size, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole is sent to the U.S. in search of his true identity.

Welcome in the New Year with free activities for the whole family at the City of Perth’s New Year’s Eve celebration. Children of all ages can enjoy high energy, interactive shows; or take part in percussion and African drumming workshops. Northbridge is set to come alive with colourful and entertaining street performances leading to an early countdown for families followed by a spectacular midnight countdown.

Stage 1: Northrbidge Piazza, corner of James and Lake Street

6.00pm - Family Entertainment Commences 
9.00pm - Family Countdown
